Masala aloo
20Oct06
In the spirit of picking up cooking as a hobby, I was surfing for recipes to try out.
Since it is the eve of Diwali, I thought, “Why not Indian food?”
I was fortunate enough to stumble across Quick Indian Cooking and the dish Masala Aloo caught my attention. It looks delicious and yet seemed simple enough to prepare.
Here’s the recipe (taken from Quick Indian Cooking)
6 medium potatoes, halved
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp cummin powder
Half tsp chilli powder
Half tsp turmeric powder
Quarter tsp asafoetida powder
1 tsp whole jeera (Cummin seeds)
2 tbsp yoghurt
2 tbsp sunflower (or other flavourless) oil
- Heat the oil on a high flame, and when hot add the asafoetida powder. Then add, in order, coriander, cummin, chilli and turmeric powders.
- Let the spices bubble up in the pot for a minute and then add the potatoes. Give them a good stir, mixing the masalas in and then add the whole cummin.
- Fry the potatoes for a minute or two until they start browning, and then add the yoghurt. Mix it into the potatoes and then lower the flame to medium, cover and cook until the potatoes are done.
- Add salt to taste. These are great as a side dish or on their own as moreish nibbles.

I wonder how spicy it is. I had an Indian housemate who had a tray of the various spices to help her in her cooking. Very cool. You should get one if you are serious about Indian cooking. I wonder if spices are bad for our stomachs.
It’s not too spicy at all actually, but if in doubt add less chilli powder and see how you go.
Spices are very good for you actually. They have natural antiseptic properties. Check out http://lifestyle.uk.msn.com/foodanddrink/article.aspx?cp-documentid=1095647 for more positives about them.
Bring it on, I say…
Thanks Mallika for the link.
