One of the places we visited in Penang was the Butterfly Farm. This is an open aviary where butterflies flutter around you as you walk through a landscaped garden.
…Upon entering the Farm, the visitor is greeted by a lush and well designed landscaped garden lined with several pathways, dotted with cages here and there, flowing fountains and a fish pond. Myriad butterflies flutter and flit silently against a multi-coloured backdrop of the different flowers and plants that fill the grounds, apparently impervious to the many humans walking around them.

It wasn’t that big an enclosure but we spent like 1.5 hours in it, walking back and forth, taking in the sheer variety of these beautiful winged creatures.
Other than butterflies, I also saw other animals closeup like iguanas, geckos, frogs, beetles, giant millipedes, scorpions, tarantulas etc.
One of the things I saw that really thrilled me was a pond with Mandarin Ducks swimming in it. I had never seen Mandarin Ducks before so I was so surprised and delighted to find them in Penang!
I never thought I would actually get to see Mandarin Ducks in real life. And to think I saw them in Penang! Keke…

she is indeed a real beauty!
The colours of the Mandarin ducks are so loud that it looks fake.
Nice pictures!!!
On a second thought, the word ‘loud’ is not the appropriate word to describe its colours. A very unique assortment of colours.
yea tell me about it! Mandarin ducks look totally unreal… almost like a toy. But they’re 100% real. I find them very beautiful.
Wow … the photos are nice .. esp the mandarin duck.. did you use a zoom lens for the close up? ..
Yup 300mm zoom.
I have a 70-300mm Sigma zoom lens which I find very useful for such photos.. and for portrait shots too
Great photos. How’s your cooking going?
Hi Mallika
I’ve stopped for a period as I was travelling quite a bit. And with Christmas round the corner, I’ve been busy with church actvities and gatherings… so haven’t had the chance to do much cooking. Just managing with quick simple meals in the evenings.
But I’m looking forward to starting my saturday cooking routine again, trying out new recipes and practicing till I get them right
Sorry to kill your vibe but that is a male mandarin duck, they are the ones with the stunning plumage. I am only writing so that you know, not with any ill intent. But yes one of the most stunning and beautiful birds I have ever seen and they are great photos.
